Roy’s hat trick snaps Eagles’ losing skid

After getting off to a rough start to a four-game road swing, the Canmore Eagles were able to break a three-game losing skid Saturday night in Lloydminster.

“Overall for the weekend we played really well,” said head coach Andrew Milne. “Last night was just a carry over from Bonnyville.”

Eagle Kory Roy had a natural hat trick in the first period and Lee Reimer had a five-point night as the Eagles defeated the Lloydminster Bobcats 7-4.

“We capitalized on some early opportunities in the game and had the win,” said Milne.

Milne said there was some sense of urgency after losing to Fort McMurray at home on Oct. 17 and the first two games of the road swing, but he felt the boys were on the right track and responded to the adversity.

The Bobcats got on the board first only 40 seconds into the game until Roy scored three straight goals to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead. However, the Bobcats fought back late in the period to tie up the game.

Canmore pulled away in the second period with goals from Bryden McGhee and Brian Doust. Doust scored his second of the game 1:50 into the third period as well to extend the Eagles lead to 6-3.

With a little over four minutes left in the game, the Bobcats made it a two-goal game, but Adam Stepen scored shorthanded into an empty net for the Eagles with seven seconds left in the game.

Sam Brittain got the start in goal for the Eagles as he stopped 27 of 31 shots in the victory.

On Friday night, the Eagles road woes continued as they lost to the Bonnyville Pontiacs 5-3.

“In Bonnyville I thought we deserved a better fate,” said head coach Andrew Milne.

The Eagles were dominant in the first half of the game as they held a 3-1 lead midway into the second period. Scoring for the Eagles were Willy Sakal, Cody Cartier and McGhee.

Bonnyville bounced back in the latter half of the second period to tie up the game 3-3 going into the second intermission.

The Pontiacs took the lead at 1:07 of the third period and scored an empty net goal with one-minute left in the game to seal the deal. Brittain started between the pipes for the Eagles as he stopped 26 of 30 shots.

On Tuesday night, the Eagles were in Brooks for the beginning of the four-game road swing. Despite keeping the score close in the first period, the Brooks Bandits took the victory 6-1.

Brooks held a 2-1 lead after the first period with the Eagles lone goal coming from Cartier on the powerplay 10:41 into the period.

The Bandits continued their scoring spree with four unanswered goals between the second and third periods.

Jared Anderson got the start in goal for the Eagles and stopped 29 of 35 shots in the loss.

The Eagles wrap up the road swing on Wednesday, Oct. 28, when they head to the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary to face the Royals. Canmore will return the favour when they host the Royals on Friday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m. at the Canmore Recreation Centre.

Canmore is back on the road on Tuesday, Nov. 3, when the Olds Grizzlys play host to the Eagles.
